Text 29 Sep The Final Countdown Begins

Miles for Matias is a little more than 2 weeks away, and everyone is hard at work.  Theta Kappa submitted an petition for the Section 87 Grant, which we hope to hear more about soon.  We also have arranged to hold a fundraiser at Cold Stone Creamery in University Plaza on Oct. 11 from 6-9pm.  Please mention Alpha Phi Omega at the counter.  We are also holding a Late Nite Event on Friday, Oct.14 from 12am-2am, where BU students can make orange ribbons to show their support for Pediatric MS.

We are also working with the B-Mets and B-Sens to receive memoribilia donations to raffle at the walk.  All the proceeds from the raffle will all go to the National Pediatri MS Center.  So far, we have raised over $500, and still counting on many more donations and people to register.

Our last meeting before the walk will also double as a memorial ceremony for Tom.  We will use the ceremony in the ritual book and hopefully skype in more brothers who knew Tom.  We’ll wrap up by registering all of our brothers for the walk.

Keep up the good work Theta Kappa!  This is definitely going to be one of our best service events of the year!

Text 19 Sep Spreading the Word and Learning about Tom

Yesterday, our president, VP of Membership and I all went to Syracuse to meet with other E-board members in other nearby chapters.  We mentioned the event to them and hope to see some other brothers come if at all possible.

A chapter of APO from Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania also saw our tumblr and contacted us!!  We are so excited that they found us!!

Theta Kappa, our chapter, is currently working to spread the word about Miles for Matias on our own campus.  Each brother will speak to at least one organization in the next two weeks and we will continue tabling.  Some of our brothers spent considerable amount of time tabling last week, really making registration a success!!!

ALSO, Jenna Rosenberg, an alum who was in Tom’s pledge class was nice enough to Skype into our brotherhood meeting last night to tell us all a little bit more about Tom and what a kind person he was.  He truly loved community service and stood for the cardinal virtues of APO!

Text 15 Sep Tabling has begun!

Look for us in the food court on Friday, September 16th, and sign up to register, ask us questions about our walk, or donate some spare change!

One month until our walk!!!!!!

The Miles for Matias Walk was created in memory of one of Alpha Phi Omega’s brothers, Tom Matias. Tom pledged Alpha Phi Omega in Spring 2007 and was an integral part of his pledge class. In Fall 2007, he transferred from Binghamton to Stony Brook in order to pursue a major in Occupational Therapy. When he transferred there, he became very involved, volunteering with children who had pediatric MS, which soon became his passion. On September 4th, 2009, Tom passed away and his pledge brothers decided to create this walk in his honor.

ALL proceeds benefit the National Pediatric MS Center at Stony Brook University Hospital and Medical Center.
